Dear Cliftonites.

 

What glorious spring weather we’re not having.  Hardly get’s one enthused about playing a set or two does it.   

 

In a slightly new twist of keeping you in the loop about the comings and goings of your club and fellow members, we’ve (rather the composer of this newsletter) decided on quick and snappy updates, on a more regular basis

 

Hope you don’t mind.   

 

AGM – Sunday 9^th OCTOBER – you’re invited...

 

Members of the committee invite you all to come down and grill them about the club.  Come and air your thoughts, views and praises.  We have a few vacancies and would love you to nominate. We’ll then have some lunch and a bit of tennis - weather permitting.

PLEASE BAG THE COURTS

 

Court Care – this is really important

 

To BAG (adj) means to evenly spread the sand around the tennis court.

 

By doing this, we reduce the friction caused by tennis shoes against court surface.  This slows the wear and tear.

 

So please look after your courts by bagging before every game you play!

 

Loving it.

 

 

Sunday Social Tennis – is back to 2 pm! 

From the 9^th October – courts are held aside for members (new, prospective and current) on Sunday’s .... 2 – 4 pm

 

Presentation night  

A great turn out from the club; great finger food and a terrific atmosphere.

(We’re still waiting for the snaps).

 

Special mention goes to our Ladies Section 18 team who have been together for a mere 17 years or so.  One of their much loved team members, Joan, sadly passed away earlier this year.  Emotionally stirred, the girls rallied together and won their first ever final. 

Such a great tribute to their friend and team mate.

Here’s how it works

·        Graded singles round robin match play each Saturday from 4 - 6 / 6.30pm.

·        Running now until late April 2012

·        Each monthly round robin is independent of the rest

·        Max.  16 players in each draw

 

A Grade: First Saturday of each month (commencing first Saturday of September).

B Grade: Second Saturday of each month (commencing second Saturday of September).

C Grade: Third Saturday of each month (commencing third Saturday of September).

·         The couch is nice – try it out sometime!

·         Netballers are welcome...as they are paying BIG fees

·         The club is financially sound  - thanks to you

·         We are getting a Telly, an Urn, and some score boards for each court

Vale Joan Graham - a tribute from her Wednesday evening tennis team 

It is the history of the Clifton Wednesday women’s team, which in recent years has played anywhere from level 16 to level 19, that we have not won a grand final in the 17 or so years together. That changed last season. It is very sad that Joan did not witness it. In my mind she is always ready to play tennis, looking trim and fit and keen to win. It is hard to think she is no longer close by.

Every Wednesday night, despite being quite a shy person, she took the time to get to know the opposing team. They and we enjoyed her good manners and enthusiasm on the court, always being generous about the good play of others, including oppositions’. She never took herself too seriously as a player even though she was an amazingly consistent and resourceful competitor.

She was a marvellous team member. As a team we could rely on there being something classy about our suppers because of Joan. We all loved her sandwiches.

As tennis players it was her life-enhancing personal qualities that we enjoyed. One of the great pleasures of knowing Joan was to listen to her talk about her family – Joan was a wonderful grandmother, a wonderful mother and a wonderful person.
